An Overview of My Unit:

Throughout this website is a Social Studies unit made up of five different lessons that I created for my Kindergarten class.  In Kindergarten, Social Studies happens every day.  Students are always learning about themselves as individuals and how they are similar to and different from the people around them.  Children learn how to celebrate and respect these similarities and differences.  In addition to learning how they are similar to and different from the other students in their classroom, Kindergarten students also learn about children from other cultures throughout the world.

Each person in the world is a unique individual.  We are similar to and different from other people in many ways.  This unit on individuality would encompass the entire year in Kindergarten.  Lessons would not happen every day.  Instead, it would be spread out throughout the year, focusing on certain topics within individuality at various times of the year.  Some of the topics that would be included in this large unit on individuality would be clothing, concepts of beauty, celebrations, food, etc.  Culture would play a large role in each of these sub-topics throughout this unit.

This specific part of the unit on individuality that these five lessons focus on is concepts of beauty.  Each of us has a unique perception of what we believe is beautiful about a person, about the world, etc.  These five lessons delve into this issue of individual differences among our concepts of beauty.  The students will explore their own beliefs about beauty as well as learn about what people of other cultures perceive as beautiful.  Throughout all of these five lessons the students will continue to develop their ability to acknowledge and respect the similarities and differences that exist among all of us.

The Essential Questions that My Unit Will Be Addressing:

·         What does the word “beauty” mean?

·         What does each of us consider beautiful?

·         How does each of us as individuals differ from other people in regard to what we each think is beautiful?

·         How is each of us beautiful in our own ways?
